National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (NLSY97)

Class of Worker

Created variables

YEMP_COW. Indicates class of worker for Employer 01, 02, etc.

Respondents age 16 and older report the class of worker for each employer as of the job's start date (see YEMP-58500), which includes:

  • Government, not a member of the armed forces
  • Private for profit company
  • Non-profit organization (including tax exempt and charitable)
  • Working without pay in a family business or farm
  • Member of the armed forces

In round 21, YEMP_COW was created to capture class of worker for all jobs in the employer roster, rather than only the newly reported jobs in YEMP‑58500. See Appendix 2 for the SAS program used to create YEMP_COW.

Comparison to Other NLS Surveys The main NLSY79 and the Young Adult surveys share the same class of worker questions; respondents reporting government jobs are also asked whether Federal, State, or local level and self-employed are asked whether their business is incorporated or unincorporated. In the Original Cohorts, during each survey year Young and Mature Women and Young and Older Men provided data on their class of worker status. For more precise details about the content of each survey, consult the appropriate cohort's User's Guide using the tabs above for more information.
