CV_CHILD_STATUS.xx. Identifies the status of the respondent's biological children.

CV_CHILD_BIRTH_DATE.xx_M/Y. Provides each biological child's actual month and year of birth.

CV_CHILD_BIRTH_MONTH.xx. Provides each biological children's date of birth in a continuous month scheme.

Marital & Marriage-Like Relationships

CV_MARSTAT_COLLAPSED. This variable identifies the current marital status of age-eligible respondents, with respondents classified in five basic marital categories--never married, married, separated, divorced, and widowed. 

Sexual Activity & Dating

Created Variables

Child Trends, Inc., created three variables related to sexual activity for release with the round 4 data set:

FP_SEXEVER. Indicates whether respondent had ever had sex by round 4 interview.

FP_SEXAGE. Provides respondent's age at first sex.

Characteristics of Non-Residential Relatives

Important Information About Characteristics of Non-Residential Relatives Data

1. During the interview, the survey program organized the informant's answers to questions about nonresident relatives into a "nonresident roster." This grid of data is the best source of information about these relatives and should be used instead of the raw data in analyses.

Parent information and other childhood background factors were gathered in the select survey rounds of the NLSY97, especially in the early rounds. Parent information comes from both youth reports and parent interviews (conducted in the first round of the survey).
