Analyses of national longitudinal survey data revealed that male college students were much more likely than females to enter fields of study with high economic returns; socioeconomic factors did not affect entry into lucrative fields net of other background factors, but did affect entry into selective colleges; and measured academic ability predicted all dependent variables.
