Data from a Hispanic civilian subsample of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (N = 849 US-born & 312 foreign-born Mexican Americans ages 14-21) are drawn on to investigate how aggregate socioeconomic indicators for this population vary by birthplace. Analysis indicates that, depending on the indicator, problems are often compounded for foreign-born youth, though the unfavorable status of Mexican Americans is not exclusive to the foreign-born. Indeed, 20% of the US-born youth fail to complete high school, 25% are unemployed, & 20% live in a poverty-income household. Implications of these socioeconomic differences for researchers & policy makers are discussed, & it is suggested that the effects of gender also be investigated. 2 Tables, 15 References.
