Each release of the Child data contains an updated series of quarterly employment variables that describes the mother's work history from one year prior to each child's date of birth up through the first ten years following the birth (or the mother's most recent interview date).  These child-based variables are measured in 13-week intervals and are constructed from the main Youth work history data file ("weekly array") that provides a weekly record of the labor force activity of each respondent from January 1, 1978, through the current survey date.

For example, the work history item from the mother's record:

Mother: Usual weeks worked by mother at main job, 13 weeks before birth of child

Becomes the following child-based item:

Child: Usual weeks worked by mother at main job, 1st quarter before birth of child

The following child-specific work history variables are constructed for the year prior to the child's birth and the child's life through age 10 (a total of 44 quarters):

  1. weeks and hours worked
  2. number of jobs held
  3. number of weeks in the military
  4. hours, occupation, industry, and pay at main job
  5. earnings at all jobs

Only the 13-week intervals of a child's life that are complete within the 1978-current survey time frame receive valid values.  Children born prior to 1/1/1978 can be identified by a value of "0" on C2700.00 (CBIRWEEK), "WEEK # OF DATE OF BIRTH OF CHILD FROM 1/1/78 TO CURRENT DATE OF INTERVIEW."  This variable is included for users who wish to link the child's birth date with other events on the main file.

The complete set of quarterly maternal employment variables is assigned to the MATERNAL WORK HISTORY area of interest and are documented as cross-round (XRND) variables without a specific year reference.

Users interested in greater detail on the NLSY79 work history data should consult the NLSY79 User's Guide, in particular, the section on Work History Data.

Survey Instruments Information about maternal work history comes from the mother's main Youth interview.

Young Adult

Beginning in 2008, a new sequence on work experiences around the birth of each child of female respondents was added to the fertility section of the Young Adult survey.  More information can be found in Fertility under Marital History, Childcare and Fertility.
