Sociologists and economists interested in the labor force participation of older males have examined a wide variety of individual level factors associated with the process of retirement. Since male disengagement from the labor force most often occurs within the context of a family unit, characteristics of that unit might reasonably be expected to influence the retirement decision-making process. Retirement is examined as an outcome of a familial decision, influenced in part by bases of structural power within the family unit. Data are presented from the NLS of Older Men. Multiple regression analyses are performed to test the model, with controls instituted for significant individual level factors. The results are presented and discussed with implications for exchange theory and family resource theory.
