The purpose of this essay is twofold: first, to report on a kind of recent social history that can usefully inform retirement policy in the future--retirement policy involving age of retirement, more general personnel planning and old age support; and second, to use the framing of this research project as a means of discussing one way that history can be applied to policy formulation in general.
