Data from a subsample (N = 101) of the NLS Young Women cohort are used to investigate the characteristics of low-income women following divorce or separation, highlighting factors that help explain a woman's ability to move out of poverty in the year following marital disruption/dissolution. Discriminant analysis results indicate that the most important discriminators of this ability are current employment status, job training, education, race, and presence of a child under age 6.
