I find a large increase in enrollment between cohorts and a smaller increase in educational attainment. Current household income affects enrollment and attainment and its role is stable across cohorts. The influence of ability on enrollment is several times larger than household income. Moreover, the role of ability appears to have changed between cohort: in the NLSY79 ability determines who attends college (at either a two–year or four–year school) while for the NLSY97, with entry into college apparently available to all, ability determines who enrolls in four–year schools. |
