This study expands the literature on social bonds in relation to race and their effect on adult marijuana use. In order to study the relationship between adolescent bonds and adult marijuana use, I utilize a racially and ethnically diverse sample, the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth Children and Young Adults 1979 (NLSYCYA). I employ Hirschi's (1969) Social Bond Theory as a framework for analysis using self-reported social bonds for adolescents in 1994 (time 1) and two measures of the respondents' adult marijuana use in 2004 (time 2). I include each aspect of this theory (attachment, involvement, commitment, and belief) to examine whether the effects of social bonds on drug use differ by race (Black, Hispanic, and White). Bivariate contingency table analysis revealed some statistically significant racial differences in adolescent social bonds. Further bivariate analysis using correlation for each racial group displayed no significant associations between the independent variables of adolescent social bonds and the dependent measures of adult marijuana use. Using the ordered logistic regression technique, further analysis of separate racial models exhibited no significance of adolescent social bonds in relation to recent adult marijuana use. The implications of these findings are discussed.
